Robert Moore Named 2024-2025 SED Coach of the Year

Moore Becomes First Men’s Coach from CSU to Win the National Honor

ATLANTA (March 5, 2025) – Usbasket.com named Robert Moore the winner of the 2025 SED Coach of the Year today presented by Trinity United & Sports Illustrated Tickets. Moore becomes the first CSU men’s coach to win the award, adding to his 2016 honor.

Robert Moore has built an incredible program at CSU, and his coaching performance this season was worthy of the top award in college basketball, the Usbasket.com SED Coach of the Year presented by Trinity United & Sports Illustrated Tickets,” said J.D. Barnes, CEO of Trinity United, LLC. “We were very impressed with the team's performance after losing their best player Rakeim Gary. This showed us strong character in Robert and the Cougar basketball team”

Moore won the top honor edging out the other three finalists Mick Hedgepeth (UAH), Mike Helfer (VSU) and Jeremiah Samarrippas (LMU). For the first time in program history, he led the Cougars on a 11-game win streak and also directed his team into the top 10 of the Associated Press (AP) Top 25 for the entire regular season, including last week where Columbus State was ranked No. 6 in the NCAA (School record). Moore has led the Cougars to an incredible 26-3 record for the 2024-25 season, one win shy of the all-time Cougar record.

“To say the least, I’m honored. I’m humbled really,” said Moore. “When you’re able to receive an award like Coach of the Year, you know it goes to your players, your assistant coaches and the best University in the country.”

Moore was chosen by the national voting board, comprised of leading journalists from around the country, current and former head coaches, former award winners and usbasket.com. This honor was presented by Trinity United LLC and Sports Illustrated Tickets.

Robert Moore entered his 15th season as head men's basketball coach at Columbus State University in 2024-25. He was named the sixth head coach in program history in April of 2010.

Moore spent six seasons (1994-2000) as an assistant under CSU’s all-time winningest coach, Herbert Greene.

In his 14 seasons in charge of the Cougars, Moore has taken Columbus State to the NCAA Tournament on five occasions, including three appearances since the 2014-15 season. Overall, the Cougars have a 242-173 record with Moore at the helm. He has coached 11 All-Peach Belt Conference players with 14 former Cougars signing professional deals since Moore's arrival. Moore coached Jarrett Adderton to be PBC Player of the Year.

Moore has guided Columbus State to four PBC Tournament championship game appearances as well as five 20-win seasons in his tenure, including a 20-11 season in 2021-22. He was also named the 2025 PBC Coach of the Year (also won in 2016).

Moore returned Columbus State to national prominence in just his second season during the 2011-12 campaign. After a magical run to the PBC Tournament title game, CSU reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006. The most memorable moments happened in his first season as the Cougars upset the Auburn Tigers 54-52 at Auburn.

The 2014-15 season was the beginning of one of the best three-year stretches in Columbus State history. In those seasons, Moore led the Cougars to a 63-26 record for a.708 winning percentage. CSU appeared in the NCAA Tournament in all three years achieving the feat for just the second time in program history. The Cougars also captured the 2016 and 2017 PBC West Division titles.
